With our new Split Vehicles feature, dispatchers can divide multi-vehicle orders into separate hauls (sub-orders), each with its own driver, status updates, and ETA, while keeping the order data clean and centralized in the original (main) order.
What It Does
When a customer requests multiple vehicles to be transported in one order, plans can change. Maybe one vehicle is ready for pickup, but the other isn’t. That’s where Split Vehicles comes in handy. It allows you to optimize driver routes, avoid idle time, and improve end-customer experience.
Here's what happens when you split:
The original order becomes a Main Order.
The vehicles you split off become Sub-Orders.
Each sub-order has its own driver, status, and ETA.
The Main Order updates automatically when all sub-orders are complete.
ℹ️ Each driver will see only the vehicles in their own sub-order.
How It Works
If there are two or more vehicles in the order, you can split those that are not yet picked up.
Go to the Order Details page in SmartHaul TMS.
Click the "Split Vehicles" button.
In the pop-up window, drag and drop vehicles into new hauls. You can create as many as needed (just make sure each has at least one vehicle).
Click Preview to assign drivers to each sub-order.
Once ready, hit Submit.
That’s it! You’ll now see:
A Main Order with all billing & customer details
Sub-orders assigned to drivers just like regular ones
Accurate, individual ETAs & statuses sent to the end-customer
ℹ️ Each order needs an assignee.
The main order gets automatically assigned to the dispatcher who has split it.
Payments & Invoicing
Scenario | Workflow |
Cash Payment | Choose which sub-order will be used to collect payment. |
Billing / Receivables | One full invoice is generated after all sub-orders are delivered, based on your payment terms. |
🚧 Current Limitations
You cannot split vehicles if the order requires Location Sharing or Driver Assignment.
Q: When does the Main Order get marked as Delivered?
When all sub-orders are delivered.
Q: Can I move vehicles from one sub-order to another?
Yes, as long as they are not picked-up yet.
Q: Can I split a picked-up order?
Not yet. You can split vehicles before they are picked up. We are happy to hear from you how often you'd need to split those too.
Q: One of my drivers did not use the app. How can I close the order?
You can change the status of each suborder manually, just like you can for all regular orders.
